"In July 2015, we rented Walton Castle in Clevedon, North Somerset, for a 60th birthday celebration/family reunion. It was the most wonderful vacation of our lives! There were fifteen of us, ages 6 to 66. We visited Bath, Glastonbury and The Cotswolds. We drank beer in the Clevedon pubs and sipped tea in the tea shops along the water. We ate fabulous dinners around the giant granite table in the kitchen. We played games and did puzzles by the fire in the huge upstairs living room. We swam in the heated swimming pool. We played real-life Castle Clue(do) wearing character t-shirts. An Olympic archer came and taught us all how to shoot arrows with bows. There was an English Literature Night, where we read (with dramatic flair) everything from Shakespeare to Monty Python. We played all the quintessential English lawn games – croquet, kubbs, quoits. And on our final night, we donned medieval costumes and held a “Tournament and Queens’ Dinner” in Turret 8, with our resident queens “knighting” the Tournament winners. All of this – ALL of it – was overseen and coordinated by the talented and hardworking staff at Walton Castle. From our first contact, Franco and Tracey bent over backwards to ensure that everything happened in a most perfect way. When the mailed costumes got rerouted to the Golf Club down the street, Tracey fetched them. When we asked for a set of bicycles, Franco fixed up his own bikes and delivered them. When we requested lawn games, Tracey ordered them. Franco even provided “Pimms” as the perfect refreshment after the archery! For us, renting an English castle for a week was a once-in-a-lifetime “bucket-list” thing. We wanted a magical experience in an extraordinary place, and Walton Castle gave us both of those – and so much more. Walton Castle will always, always hold a very special place in our hearts"
