The United Kingdom (UK) is situated off mainland Europe in the North Atlantic Ocean. It consists of four countries: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The scenery ranges from rural English countryside to the Scottish mountains and glens, and from the Welsh Beacons to the Northern Irish coasts and hills. Famous attractions in the UK include the important prehistoric site of Stonehenge on Salisbury Plain, the Houses of Parliament in London, as well as the impressive Northern Ireland parliament buildings at Stormont, the large Scottish lake of Loch Ness, the historic castles of Cardiff and Edinburgh, and the more recent Eden Project in Cornwall.
