The county of Dorset is situated in the south west of England. It has a coastline on the English Channel - part of which is the famous Jurassic Coast and its attractions like Durdle Door's natural arch, the limestone cove at Lulworth and the 18 mile long shingle bank of Chesil Beach. The county also has areas of heathland, hilly regions such as the Purbeck Hills and Dorset Downs and one of the largest natural harbours in the world, Poole Harbour.
The county town is Dorchester. Other towns in the county include the seaside resorts of Weymouth, Bournemouth, Swanage and Lyme Regis, the historic market towns of Sherborne, Shaftesbury and Blandford Forum and the large seaport of Poole. The county also has many picturesque villages nestled in places such as the Blackmore Vale and Frome Valley.
Places to visit range from the famous chalk carving of the Cerne Abbas Giant to the Iron Age hill fort of Maiden Castle, the impressive hilltop remains of Corfe Castle to the stately splendour of Kingston Lacy House and the subtropical gardens and swannery at Abbotsbury to the Monkey World ape and monkey sanctuary.
