Dumfriesshire in the south west of Scotland, stretches from mountains in the north, through rolling hills and plains, down to the sea in the south and west. Famously the poet Robert 'Robbie' Burns, lived in Dumfriesshire at Ellisland Farm. Robert Burns wrote many of his great poems whilst living at Ellisland Farm, taking inspiration from the beauty of the natural world around him. Ellisland Farm is now a popular Burns museum with several walking routes in the surrounding area.

For a grander example of historical interest, the 17th century Drumlanrig Castle in its 90,000 acre estate will not fail to impress. With its stunning scenery the Drumlanrig Estate offers delightful woodland trails for walking and mountain biking and inside the castle you will find an outstanding collection of fine art and antiques. Many outlets for arts and crafts can be found in Dumfriesshire, given its lively community of artists, potters and weavers. The National Museum of Costume is also worth a visit with over 100 years of Scottish costumes on display.

For outdoor pursuits, there are numerous activity centres in the area providing opportunities for outdoor activities as varied as mountain biking, game shooting (pheasant and partridge), mountain boarding and blokarting. The 7 Stanes trails consist of mountain biking routes that stretch right across southern Scotland, presenting a particularly rewarding challenge for enthusiastic mountain bikers. For more gentle exercise, numerous walking routes can be found, such as the Annan Shore Walk along the estuary of the River Annan. Dumfriesshire is also noted for the wide choice of local produce and fine ales that are available in the pubs and restaurants throughout the region.
